March Computer Buying Guide

Introduction

When buying a computer it is very important to know what it has inside. Cheap computers often have very little to offer in features and upgradablilty. Of course, you have to know what YOU want your computer to be capable of doing.

This guide is targeted towards home users who are not very familiar with technical computer jargon. If you are an expert, you probably know this stuff already. The guide is meant to be simple and straight to the point. To make things easier, the guide has been divided into several categories. Choose a category closest to your needs.

Explain the components first
Simple explanations of what's inside a computer.

Value System
I am doing a computer course and I need something to practice with and to do projects. I need something reasonably cheap. It's bad enough paying for the course. Oh, don't forget, I want to surf the internet too.

Small Office/Home Office (SOHO)
I want a computer to do word processing, spreadsheets, store records and accounting stuff.

General All Purpose (Family PC)
I need a computer the whole family can use. Some want to create post cards for friends, newsletters, posters and stuff like that. Some want to play games. Everyone wants to surf the net.

Value Gamer
I want a good gaming system but I am on a tight budget.

Hard Core Gamer
I want to play games galore! 2D, 3D any 'D'. I want top quality graphics. I want to play Quake and Unreal all day. Ignore price, I want performance!
