Family PC
|
| The Family PC should be versatile and powerful
enough to cater to every user's needs. It will be used to perform
a wide variety of task such as playing MP3s, surfing the net,
creating graphics and paying games. However, with the expense
of running a home, it is a budget conscience PC. |
| |
| Processor - 650MHZ or faster Pentium or Athlon.
|
| The AMD Athlon or Intel Pentium is recommended
for our all-purpose Family PC. AMD's Athlon processors are the
cheaper choice. |
| |
| Memory- 128MB |
| 64MB of memory may do the trick, but for smoother
running, consider 128MB. It is always better to have more memory.
Programs will run more efficiently with fewer crashes and more
programs can also be run at the same time. |
| |
| Video Card - Reputable brand with 16MB or
more memory |
| If any one in the family is going to be playing
games or using graphic intensive software, then it's best to
get a video card. When I say games I am not talking about Solitaire
or Hearts, I mean games with realistic 3D graphics and action.
If no one is going to using graphic intensive software, then
an 8MB video card shall suffice or even a motherboard with onboard
video. |
| |
| Sound Card: |
| Surly, with the current MP3 craze, everyone is
going to want a music collection. If you are an audiophile,
get a good soundcard; it will enhance the quality of the music.
Maybe if you are a person who couldn't care less how it sounds
once you can hear it, then a motherboard with onboard sound
ought to be adequate. Of course you will need at least a pair
of speakers; a soundcard can't work on its own. |
| |
| Hard drive - capacity: 20GB or more. Speed:
5400rpm |
| With the family all sharing the same computer,
storage space becomes an issue, as everyone wants install they
own programs and store they own files. The larger the hard drive's
capacity, the better. |
| |
| Monitor - Size: 15" or 17" |
| Certainly you would be happier with a 17" monitor,
but if cost or space becomes an issue consider a 15". The cost
difference better the two however is not that great, so if you
save for a little while longer, then you can afford the 17".
|
| |
| CD-ROM - 32X - 48X |
| A 32x CD-ROM should be sufficient for most computers.
The increased performance of a faster drive may be hardly noticeable
but it feels good to have one. |
