(BKA Press Release Sep 10, 2007)

A large driver turnout made for some exciting racing at Bushy Park as the Barbados Karting Association Inc ran round eight of the 2007 Frutee Championship on Sunday 30th, September.

Qualifying in the Championship class saw Orry Hunte take pole position 0.17 second ahead of Conor Roach who was again in Dane Skeete's kart. These two were well clear of the rest of the field which was led by Jesse Kelly and Nick Gill. The shifter class opted to draw lots for their grid positions and the Junior classes were business as usual with Alexander Gill, Mark Kinch, Joshua Kelly and Christian Hinds battling it out.

In the Championship class action Orry Hunte (left) led away from pole in the first of the four races with Conor Roach in hot pursuit. These two slowly drew away from the field but on the sixth lap Conor coasted to a stop with a broken clutch. This promoted David Evelyn, driving his new Tonykart chassis, to second place and Allan Kinch to third. Orry and Conor started in seventh and eighth places in the reverse order grid for the second race and this was probably the race of the day as these two battled through the field ahead of them. Conor passed Orry and two other karts at the first corner and then calmly picked off the remaining karts in front of him to win from eighth position. Orry, briefly held up in midpack, soon used his experience to drive to second place from seventh on the grid. A storming Allan Kinch again finished third – noteworthy as Allan is at something of a weight disadvantage relative to his fellow competitors. With his accumulated points from the first two races Orry started the third race from pole with Allan Kinch next to him and Conor, because of his DNF in the first race, back in sixth. Orry led away from the flag and never looked back. Behind him there was close dicing and when the dust settled Allan Kinch, in another sterling performance, held on for second place ahead of a charging Conor Roach who had fought his way through the pack once again to finish third. The final Championship race saw Orry and Allan on the front row with Conor and Jesse Kelly behind them. Once again Orry was not to be denied and led away from the start. Conor had a good start and ended the first lap in second place behind Orry. And that was how it ended with David Evelyn demonstrating the potential of the new chassis by finishing third from an eighth place starting position. Allan Kinch finished the race fourth to secure a well-deserved second place overall for the day behind Orry Hunte and ahead of Conor Roach.

The 230Lb Junior class saw an upset as Jacob Kelly (right), recovered from his stay in hospital which caused him to miss the last race meeting, pulled off three wins and a second place from four races to finish ahead of Alexander Gill and Samantha Gill who drove to second place ahead of her brother in the last race of the day. Overall they finished Jacob, Alexander and Samantha.

It was again a Kelly – this time Joshua – who emerged winner in the 270lb class. With two wins and two second places Joshua finished the day well ahead of rival Mark Kinch who, despite winning the two races Joshua didn't win, was underweight at the end of the first race and did not finish the last race thus handing second place to Christian Hinds who thoroughly enjoyed the 'champagne' ceremony afterwards.

The 125cc shifter class again had a good turnout, with six karts taking the flag, and provided an unusually 'normal' result this time given it's usual action. There was no Barry Mayers this time but another rally driver tried his hand at karting – this time Brett Clarke. Mark Maloney (left) was uncatchable and emerged overall winner with a clean sweep of all four races. Orry Hunte drove hard to secure second place ahead of Stuart Maloney who was followed home by brother Sean and Brett Clarke. Paul Bourne was plagued with a misfiring engine and it was not until the last race that the problem was identified – although this did not prevent Paul from notching up his fourth DNF of the day.

The BKAI would like to thank its long-time series sponsor Frutee for supporting the sport.
