After a long break for the summer holidays karting action
returned to the Bushy Park circuit on Sunday 9th, September
when the Barbados Karting Association Inc ran round seven
of the 2007 Frutee Championship.
Qualifying
in the Championship class saw Orry Hunte (right) take a comfortable
pole position in the absence of Dane Skeete who will be out
of karting for a while as he pursues his studies overseas
and Conor Roach (right) with two engine failures for the weekend
did not make qualifying and so started at the back of the
grid.
The Junior classes were well represented with young Brian
Hinds joining the fray in the 230Lb Yamaha class. Missing
from this class was young Jacob Kelly grappling with illness
the entire karting fraternity wishes Jacob a speedy
recovery.
In
the Championship class Orry Hunte (left) had it all his own
way as he stormed away to four wins and emerged overall winner
on the day. Given Orrys earlier disappointments in the
year this was a welcome showing. Starting from last position
in the first race and using Dane Skeetes kart for the
first time Conor Roach had a problem-plagued day and did exceptionally
well to finish second overall. Third position was a closely
fought affair with just one point separating Jesse Kelly and
Matthew Noel at the end of the day. Jesse used his experience
to secure third but it was a good showing by Matthew who is
improving with each race day. A good days performance
by Owen Yarde saw him into fifth overall and he was followed
home by Nick Blades making a comeback to the sport
and Luke St John, Chris Hinds and Allan Kinch
who had all his years share of bad luck.
The
230Lb Junior class was again won by Alexander Gill who won
all four races from sister, Samantha. Brian Hinds was third
on his first outing and was all smiles at the end of the day.
The Sportsman class was dominated for the second time in
succession by Mark Kinch, winning all four races to emerge
with 100 points for the day. Second was Joshua Kelly.
The
125cc shifter class had a good turnout, with six karts taking
the flag, and provided its usual action. A return by
Sean Maloney and Paul Bourne boosted the classes entry.
Being equipped with a gearbox these karts make a standing
start and this provides some off-the-line action which often
sees pole sitters passed before the first corner and back
markers doing a 'come from behind' charge. Mark Maloney emerged
from the fray in first overall after winning three of the
four races. He was followed home by Barry Mayers who was just
one point clear of Stuart Maloney a good indication
of the hot action on the track. Sean Maloney was fourth on
his first outing in a while and Orry Hunte and Paul Bourne
had to settle for fifth and sixth.
The BKAI would like to thank its long-time series sponsor
Frutee for supporting the sport.
