News From Barbados Karting Association

Barry MayersRace Day 6 in the BKA's 2006 calendar was sponsored by McEnearney Quality and, once again, was notable for some close racing in the Yamaha Championship class. It also saw the return of local motorsport ace Barry Mayers (right) - who tried a Shifter kart for the first time and acquitted himself very well.

The day also marked the return to the Yamaha Championship class of Orry Hunte who provided the closest dice of the day in Race Four when he harried Conor Roach from flag to flag with less-than-inches to spare between the two karts. Conor was able to fend off Orry in the end but it bodes well for local motorsport to see this level of driving among the young, up-and-coming karters.

But the day belonged to Dane Skeete in the Yamaha Championship class. Dane pulled off a clean sweep of four wins from four starts and once again has the Championship firmly in his sights.

Jesse Kelly and Nicholas Blades rounded out the Yamaha Championship Class with Nicholas suffering a clutch failure which kept him out for most of the day. Fortunately, the only other 'failure' for the day was a flat rear tyre which dropped Conor Roach down a couple of points.

Another impressive performance that went almost unnoticed in the excitement of the dicing in the Yamaha class was Joshua Kelly's steady drive in the 'junior' class - Joshua started all four races behind the 'big guns' and was not caught by any of the faster karts.

Orry HunteIn the Shifter class it was a clean sweep for Orry Hunte (left) who capitalised on the absence of Stuart Maloney, still awaiting parts for his damaged engine. Barry Mayers proved he has forgotten none of the lessons learned in his years of karting. He quickly came to grips with the gearbox-equipped kart and ended the day second in the class ahead of a breathless Peter Hinkson who was bravely confronting the sheer physical fitness required to drive a kart competitively.

The BKA would like to acknowledge the support of McEnearney Quality for karting - without support the sport and the next generation of drivers would not progress.
