Barbados Rally Club Honours Its Champions
Hundreds gather for Annual Awards

The 2005 achievements of more than 40 members of the Barbados Rally Club (BRC) were recognised on Saturday night (November 26) at the Club's Annual Awards ceremony, staged at the Barbados Golf Club in Durant's. Hundreds of motor sport enthusiasts, plus family and friends, gathered to honour those who have provided some superb entertainment in a highly-competitive season.

The major winners were Roger Mayers and Max Ferri (Trivial Pursuit/ McEnearney Quality Ford Focus WRC), champion driver and co-driver respectively in the inaugural Texaco BRC Rally Championship, and Roger Hill (Mobil 1/Nassco/Motormac/Michelin Toyota Celica GT4), who finished the season Overall Champion of the Virgin Atlantic BRC Driver's Championship.

Neil Barnard
Barry Mayers

Others to be called to the presentation table more than once during the evening included Neil Barnard and Barry Mayers. Barnard not only won the Production 2 Group in the Virgin Atlantic championship in the Shell Helix/Courts/Automotive Art/Kerridge/Simpson Motors Suzuki Ignis Sport's debut season, but he was also Champion Navigator in the BRC 4 x 4 Navigational Championship, in which he guided Barry Gale to the Champion Driver's title in the Yokohama/Nishi Koi Fish Food Mitsubishi L200.

Mayers was rewarded as runner-up in Modified Open in the Virgin Atlantic championship, but he and co-driver Adam Hart collected most of their plaudits for their performance in the Trivial Pursuit/Nassco Toyota Starlet in rounds of the Texaco championship, in which they finished fourth overall and highest-placed crew in a two-wheel-drive car; Mayers was also voted Texaco Star of the Championship for his impressive 'giant-killing acts.

In his remarks as competition secretary of the Club, Gale (left) noted the record-breaking level of support the Club had enjoyed from sponsors in 2005, giving particular mention and thanks to Texaco West Indies Ltd and Virgin Atlantic Barbados. For their part, the sponsors' representatives both welcomed their involvement in motor sport.

Andrea Gooding
Rachel Pilgrim

Texaco, which was represented by brand marketing specialist, Caribbean, Andrea Gooding, moves into the second year of its agreement to sponsor the rally championship next year. Meanwhile Rachel Pilgrim, sales and marketing manager of Virgin Atlantic Barbados, told the appreciative audience how much the company had enjoyed its involvement with motor sport this year and said she looked forward to continuing the link into 2006.

As one of the prime movers behind the 4 x 4 Navigational Championship, Lindsay Farmer echoed Gale's thoughts, thanking in particular those landowners who permitted Safari events to cross their land, also those sponsors who had been involved in the championship this year, Automotive Art, AutoZone Inc, Barbados Industries Ltd, McEnearney Quality, Nassco and Neptune Tours.

Both Farmer and Gale had a word for the marshals, without whose voluntary and unpaid assistance organisation of events would not be possible. Club chairman Bruce Lambert presented two special awards, both reinforcing this point: Biddy Barber was recognised for her long-standing support of the Club, and this year especially her commitment to running Spectator Prize '05 ticket sales throughout the season; Roger Sargeant was recognised for his total dedication to the sport, his continued involvement in assisting the Club with arranging equipment and so forth for every event, marshalling and being available at every opportunity.

The formal part of the evening ended with the announcement of the winner of Spectator Prize 05, a 1600cc Ford Focus Sedan, valued at more than $50,000. The scheme - the BRC's first-ever spectator draw - resulted from a joint venture with Aqua Pur water and McEnearney Quality Inc, at whose premises in Wildey the draw had taken place earlier in the day.

Mark Hamilton, Shaneka Odderson
& Family

McEnearney Quality boss Mark Hamilton made the announcement - the winning ticket had been purchased by Shaneka Odderson, who was there with her family, as was their Ford Focus. Hamilton said: "I have rarely enjoyed a telephone call as much as the one I made at 3.00 pm today to Shaneka; she was so excited by the news, I think she dropped the 'phone and danced round the room. Then seeing the delight on all their faces was a very special way for the Barbados Rally Club to end the evening . . . and to bring the curtain down on what has been one of the Club's most successful seasons."
