Hunte, Skeete And Maloney Excel In Barbados
Karting Finale
As the curtain came down on the Barbados Karting Association
(BKA) 2004 Fru-tee Championship season this Sunday November
21st, which featured an exiting day of racing at the Bushy
Park racetrack in St. Phillip, Orry Hunte (right) finished
the year the way he started, by outperforming the field of
five karters in the Yamaha 310-lb Premier class.
Even after a seemingly shaky start when for the first time
for the year, Orry failed to secure pole position and was
beaten in the first race by Dane McConney, Orry came back
strong to win the remain three races in the highly competitive
class, with a display of controlled driving in his number
6 ADO Trading Wright kart in both dry and wet conditions.
Turning in an impressive day's performance after spending
most of the year in Karting wilderness was rallying rookie
Matthew "Snuffy" Staffner (right), who did well
to keep his number 4 Structural Systems Top Kart ahead of
the charging Alan Maynard and his number 14 Birel.
Still down on his luck after a brilliant start, Dane McConney
broke his engine supports and a wheel sprocket on the number
32 ACT/Gunk Deavinson Sprint, on the way to finishing just
outside the points. Also returning after a spectacular racing
accident in the previous round was Michael Lambert, who only
managed to compete in two of the four allotted races due to
injuries sustained.
Dane
Skeete (right) returned to his winning ways by bringing his
number 12 Citgo/Goodyear Birel home in first position in three
of the four races allotted for the 250-lb Yamaha Sportsman
restricted class, to secure first position overall with 93
points. Unable to repeat
his previous-round heroics where he upset Skeete, Conor Roach
(left) secured only one victory in the four encounters in
the number 27 Gold 355, to earn second position for the day
with 83 points, followed by Scott Parkinson who repeat his
commendable performance to again earn third position with
68 points.
In the heavy category Sean Downie got the better of Alan
Croney to finish in first position for the class with 75 points,
while Croney finished with 22.
Noticeably absent in the 125cc shifter class were brothers
Sean and Mark Maloney, both of whom recently returned from
competing in the Guyana International Race meet earlier in
the month, where they represented Barbados well in both Group
3 racecars and shifter-karts.
However,
Stuart (right) represented the Maloney racing family well
to take the fight in the gearbox-kart class to previous round
winner Ryan Golsalves in the number 4 Red Bull Tracey kart.
Stuart was able to compensate for mechanical problems in his
borrowed number 19Tracey kart by winning three of the four
races and end the day with 96 points ahead of Ryan on 88.
At he close of the day's racing, engines of the winning karts
were impounded by the Clerk of The Course to verify conformance
with BKA regulations. The 2004 Fru-tee Championship winners
will be announced after completion of these routine tests.
